We originally formed as a wheelchair basketball team playing in the GBWBA league for six seasons but due to lack of numbers in 2006 season we were struggling to compete. It was at this point that we were introduced to the game of Wheelchair Rugby League by players from Cleckheaton in Yorkshire having already known some of their players from the basketball league we were invited to train with them with the hope of expanding the game into parts of the north west.
After training with the guys for a couple of months some of our players were selected to play alongside the Yorkshire lads as a Great Britain team going over to play test matches in France. Here the game had already been established for about two years.
Since our introduction to the game we have found that with most of our players having natural pace combined with the extra intensity & aggression of the sport we have finally found a game that really suits us
We recently played a friendly match against the Cleckheaton side at their venue coming out victorious with the score 26-16 and will soon be arranging an official Lancashire versus Yorkshire three-game test series (details will be posted on this site)
Finally we’re always looking for new players and/ or sponsorship with the aim of expanding the game to one day form a national league so if you’re interested just click on our contacts & sponsorship section. As well as being a great way to keep fit we have a great team atmosphere, often having social nights at the Belle Vue dog track & Christmas parties
All the best from The Wigan & District Wheelchair Rugby lads.
